Aims And Objectives Aim: The aim of this course is to expand the academic and clinical knowledge of the intern dentists in the fields of Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics and Oral Surgery. Information in this course will be presented in the form of lectures in the light of current and thematic dental literature. Objectives: At the end of this course, intern dentists should be able to: 1. Carry out a thorough history and examination, and establish a treatment plan for the patient. 2. Determine tooth restorability. 3. Perform all classes of amalgam and composite resin restorations. 4. Describe which restorative material should be used in a particular procedure and why. 5. Describe the procedure, burs and instruments used, and sequence of procedure to start and complete cavity preparations and restorations on various teeth. 6. Describe the biological basis and predictable root canal treatment. 7. Differentiate between pulpal and periapical diagnoses. 8. Apply, interpret, and understand various diagnostic tests in endodontics. 9. Identify conditions for which endodontic treatment is indicated or contraindicated. 10. Describe the most common root and pulp anatomy for each tooth. 11. Identify major objectives of access cavity preparation in both anterior and posterior teeth. 12. Describe why straight line access is critical in access cavity preparation. 13. Describe the procedure, burs used, and sequence of procedure to start and complete access cavity preparation on various teeth. 14. Understand the importance of what treatment and procedure to carry out in dental trauma cases. 15. Describe the common human diseases encountered in general dental practice (GDP) and understand how to manage each condition in the dental setting. 16. Know common drugs encountered and their interactions. 17. Understand the need of infection control and the current guidelines in it. 18. Understand how to work in a team. 19. Demonstrate the knowledge of the medical emergency drug box and manage a medical emergency professionally and efficiently when encountered. 20. Describe the complications of tooth extraction and know how to manage these complications and their outcome. 21. Know the different types of local anesthesia, what’s available in GDP, and methods of administration. 22. Calculate the maximum dosage of LA for each patient, and understand the complications of LA that could be encountered and how to manage them. 23. Understand the different trimesters of a pregnant woman as well as the importance of what treatment and procedure to carry out during pregnancy and know the appropriate medication to give based on the FDA and BNF guidelines. 24. Understand and know the protocols of how to write a prescription. 25. Write and complete a referral form, and understand when to refer. 26. Understand ethics and dental professionalism and their importance in the career.
